MUMBAI – The government will buy back four gilts worth INR 300 billion Thursday, the Reserve Bank of India said Friday. The buyback auction will be held at 1030-1130 IST Thursday and the settlement will take place on Sept. 4.

All four gilts at the buyback mature in the financial year 2026-27 (Apr-Mar), which means the government is effectively pre-paying the securities rather than reducing its repayment burden in upcoming financial years.

The gilts up for buyback are the 7.33%, 2026 bond, the 5.74%, 2026 bond, the 8.15%, 2026 bond, and the 8.24%, 2027 bond. There is no notified amount for each of the individual securities up for buyback. The four bonds have a total outstanding of INR 1.60 trillion.

This is the fourth buyback auction in the current financial year. The government bought back the same four gilts in the three previous auctions, totalling INR 257 billion. At the last auction on Aug. 6, the RBI accepted bids for the government to buy back INR 57.12 billion worth of the gilts, against the notified amount of INR 200 billion.

The buyback auction will be conducted through the RBI's core banking solution system E-Kuber. The RBI said the government can decide on the amounts for individual securities, accept more or less than the notified amount of INR 300 billion, and accept or reject any of the offers wholly or partially without assigning any reason.  End
