NEW DELHI – With rising demand for mobility and expansion of highway infrastructure, India is taking signficant strides towards a cleaner and sustainable mobility ecosystem, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told automobile executives at the 66th Soceity of Indian Automobile Manufacturers annual convention Thursday.

"The rapid expansion of highways and other infrastructure is facilitating the movement of people and goods while creating new opportunities for the automobile industry," addressing the convention through a letter, Modi said.

Modi said production-linked incentive schemes and 'make in India' initiative have strenghthened the manufacturing capabilities of the automobile industry. He said the government reforms have improved ease of doing business and have given a fresh impetus to the industry. The recent free trade agreements will provide the Indian automobile industry a stage to further expand its global presence, Modi said.

The prime minister urged automakers to continue innovating and proactively lead India towards 'Viksit Bharat'. "This journey will bring transformative opportunities and significant growth for the mobility sector while further strengthening transport as a key pillar of national development," he said.

The Minister of Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy also addressed the SIAM convention, emphasising over Prime Minister Modi's vision to build a cleaner and advanced mobility ecosystem which is self-reliant and globally competitive.

Kumaraswamy said the infrastructure for charging electric vehicles is an important pillar to increase the electric vehicle adoption in India. More funds are being allocated and being sanctioned, including funds to states, to expand the public charging infrastructure, he added.

The minister said scheme worth INR 72.80 billion for integrated rare earth permanent manufacturing will establish 6,000 tonnes per annum capacity in India. "Critical metals and rare earth materials are strategically important for batteries, motors and other advanced technologies," he said.

According to Kumaraswamy, these enhancements will reduce external vulnerabilities and strengthen India's position across electric mobility and other strategic sectors. "India's opportunity is bigger than the domestic EU market. We have manufacturing, engineering talent and a growing market."

The minister urged the industry leaders to build a cleaner, inclusive, globally competitive automotive sector, adding, "...our ambition should be to move from being a large automotive market to a global hub for sustainable mobility."  End
