MUMBAI – Mumbai recorded a surge in the intensity of rainfall in the last few days, with the city recording 89 millimetres of showers on Saturday and 79 millimetres on Sunday, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. Rainfall is likely to become mild and intermittent during the rest of the week as the active monsoon surge weakens, and another wet spell is only likely between Sept. 21 and Sept. 24, the weather agency said.
The main trigger for showers during the weekend was the low-pressure area over Madhya Pradesh. Currently, the weather system has weakened and lies over north Gujarat and south Rajasthan. It is likely to diffuse over land and merge with the seasonal monsoon trough, the weather agency said. As such, only light to moderate rainfall is likely over Mumbai during this week, the agency said.
Early projections show that conditions are becoming favourable for another wave of showers over Mumbai early next week, the weather agency said. There is a likelihood of another weather system forming over the Bay of Bengal and moving inland towards the central and southern parts of the country. The movement of this system could trigger a wet spell over the city between Sept. 21 and Sept. 24. Though these showers are unlikely to be as intense as the previous wet spell, they could help the city meet its target for September. Mumbai has accumulated a total of 219.4 millimetres of rainfall so far, against the monthly normal of 383.5 millimetres, the agency said. End
