--SEBI chief: No letter from NSE seeking OK for its shrs to be traded on NSE

MUMBAI – The Securities and Exchange Board of India has not received any letter from the National Stock Exchange of India Ltd. seeking permission for allowing its shares to trade on the NSE in the permitted-to-trade category, Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey said Thursday on the sidelines of an infrastructure conclave organised by the National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development in Mumbai. As per SEBI norms, a stock exchange can admit a stock in the permitted-to-trade category if it is listed and traded in other stock exchanges.

SEBI's rules for stock exchanges prohibit their self-listing, that is, listing on own platform. So, when BSE Ltd. came out with its IPO a few years ago its shares got listed on the NSE. Shares of the NSE, whose initial public offering opened Thursday, will be listed on the BSE post listing.

There is, however, lack of clarity on whether a stock exchange can admit its own shares in the permitted to trade category on its own platform. Pandey was not clear in his response to a media reporter's question whether this was allowed or not.  End
