NEW DELHI – The government's net direct tax collections rose 13% on year to INR 12.124 trillion during Apr. 1-Sept. 17, buoyed by a nearly 20% increase in corporate tax collections, data released by the finance ministry Friday showed. Net direct tax collections so far account for 45% of the INR-26.97-trillion target set in the Budget for the financial year 2026-27 (Apr-Mar).
Corporate tax collections rose 19.5% to INR 5.56 trillion during the period. The Budget had projected corporate tax collections to grow 11% to INR 12.31 trillion in FY27.
The government has collected advance tax to the tune of INR 5.219 trillion during the period, up 16.2% on year. Of this, advance corporate tax collection was INR 4.161 trillion, up 18.1% on year. The government collects advance tax in four instalments--in June, September, December, and March.
On a gross basis, the government collected INR 14.324 trillion as of Thursday, up 15.2% on year. The steady pace of growth in net tax collection is despite the rise in refunds during Apr. 1-Sept. 17. Refunds issued during the period jumped 29.2% to 2.2 trillion.
The pace of growth in non-corporate tax moderated from earlier months, and rose 6% as of Thursday to INR 6.162 trillion. Non-corporate tax includes taxes paid by individuals, Hindu Undivided Families, firms, associations of persons, bodies of individuals, local authorities, and artificial juridical persons.
The government has collected securities transaction tax worth INR 402.14 billion as of Thursday, up 52.9% on year, likely due to the increase in the tax on futures transactions to 0.05% from 0.02% in the Budget for FY27.
The government has projected total tax collections in FY27 at INR 44.04 trillion, up 9.4% on year. Of this, it aims to collect INR 26.97 trillion as direct taxes, up 18.1% from FY26. The government aims to collect INR 737 billion from securities transaction tax in FY27. End
