NEW DELHI – The National Housing Bank Friday slapped a penalty of INR 10.90 million on Aavas Finaniers Ltd. in relation to certain loan pools availed under the refinance scheme. NHB also asked Aavas Financiers to repay a refinance facility aggregating to approximately INR 122.4 million, the housing finance company said in an exchange filing.

"The Company shall take necessary actions to comply with the directions," Aavas Financiers said. It did not disclose details of the "certain loan pools", but media reports a few months ago had said NHB was investigating Aavas Financiers for alleged discrepancies in certain loan classifications, purported reversal of refinancing facilities by the NHB, and management changes at the company linked to such purported reversal of refinancing.

At that time, Aavas Financiers had "strongly refuted" the assertions and called the reports "misleading, malicious, speculative and not an accurate characterisation" of the company's engagement with the National Housing Bank. "NHB, in the ordinary course of its regulatory and refinancing oversight, conducts periodic audits, reviews and supervisory engagements with housing finance companies, including Aavas, and one such inspection is ongoing and has not concluded," the company had said.

For the June quarter, the home loans company had posted a net profit of INR 1.71 billion on revenues of INR 7.09 billion. Friday, its shares closed slightly higher than Thursday at INR 1,284.60 on the National Stock Exchange.  End
