MUMBAI – India received 4 millimetres of rainfall on Sunday, 16% below the normal of 4.8 millimetres, data from the India Meteorological Department showed. During Jun. 1-Sept. 10, the country recorded 699.7 millimetres of precipitation, 15% below normal for the period.
Of the four homogenous regions in the country, rainfall was above normal in one and below normal in three, according to the data. Rainfall in south peninsula India was 52% above normal at 9.4 millimetres. Rayalaseema and Tamil Nadu and Puducherry recorded "large excess" rainfall, which was a whopping 447% and 190% above normal, respectively. The formation of a low pressure area over the Andaman Sea triggered the formation of several weather systems, such as troughs and upper air cyclonic circulations. The presence of these systems caused intense rainfall over the eastern parts of the south peninsula.
In central India, rainfall was 18% below normal at 4 millimetres, the data showed. Rainfall in northwest India was 55% below normal at 0.9 millimetres, while in east and northeast India, it was 58% below normal at 3.3 millimetres.
In the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was "large deficient" in 11, "normal" in eight, "deficient" in seven, "excess" in three, and "large excess" in three. Four subdivisions--Delhi-Haryana-Chandigarh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh--did not record any rainfall on Sunday, the data showed. End
