NEW DELHI - India needs to build capacities in critical energy sectors, Tata Steel Managing Director T.V. Narendran said Monday. "India needs to build capabilities in critical technologies and strategic sectors while remaining connected to global sources of capital, technology, resources, and markets," he said at the Platinum Jubilee National Management Conference organised by the All India Management Association.
"Competing globally requires scale, productivity, quality, technology, reliability, and cost-competitiveness," he said. Greater participation in global market achievements can provide another important source of growth, according to the Tata Steel boss, who is also president of the All India Manufacturers' Association.
To compete globally, companies need to keep investing through economic cycles and make capabilities that can withstand changes in the global environment, Narendran said. "Employment and influence are another dimension that will determine the duration of this growth," he said. "The growing economy has to create productive employment at scale and enable incomes to rise across the cross-section of the population."
Over the past decade, India has made significant investments in infrastructure, strengthened its financial system, improved formalisation, and created foundations for private capital, according to Narendran. "Electronics and semiconductors, data centres, renewable energy, electric mobility, weapons manufacturing, and other technology-intensive sectors are attracting significant capital and creating new capabilities," he said.
According to Narendran, technology and trade will have an important role in determining how these investments translate into productivity and competitiveness. "India's relationship with global markets is therefore an important part of the transformation story," he said.
For the June quarter, Tata Steel had reported a consolidated net profit of INR 23.18 billion on revenues of INR 607.94 billion. At 1410 IST, its shares were at INR 184.12 apiece on the National Stock Exchange, down 0.7% from Friday. End
