MUMBAI – Benchmark stock indices ended higher Wednesday due to positive sentiment as crude oil prices eased amid hope of the reopening of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Prices of crude oil were around $99 per barrel. Metal companies gained the most Wednesday on higher commodity prices. Meanwhile, flash PMI data for manufacturing showed India's private sector activity improved in September, which boosted sentiment.
The Nifty 50 ended 0.5% higher at 23446.80, up 117.80 points, and the BSE Sensex closed 0.4% higher at 74828.25, up 299.17 points. Broader market indices ended higher as well. Mid-cap indices closed 0.5-0.6% higher, while small-cap indices ended 0.8-0.9% higher.
Metal players Tata Steel, Hindalco Industries, and JSW Steel closed 2-3% higher and were the top gainers in the Nifty 50. According to BigMint's report, its India steel composite index rose to an over four-year high on strong demand amid declining inventories. "The index edged higher as prices strengthened across both long and flat steel segments, supported by lean inventories, improving post-monsoon demand, and continued supply discipline adopted by the major mills," it said in the report. Another steel major, Steel Authority of India, closed nearly 7% higher. The Nifty Metal rose over 2%, the best performer among sectoral indices.
Financial services major Bajaj Finance ended nearly 3% higher and was the top gainer in the Nifty 50. The stock snapped its two-session fall after investment bank UBS upgraded its recommendation on the stock to "neutral" from "sell", NDTV Profit reported. The target price on the stock was raised nearly 21% to INR 1,100. Fast-moving consumer goods companies Nestle India, ITC, and Tata Consumer Products ended around 1% higher each.
Among individual stocks Apollo Hospitals Enterprises, Power Grid Corp. of India, Grasim Industries, UltraTech Cement, and Larsen & Toubro ended 2-3% higher. On the other hand, information technology companies HCL Technologies, Infosys, Wipro, and Tata Consultancy Services ended around 1% lower each. The Nifty IT closed nearly 1% higher. Coal India and Titan Co. closed around 1% lower as well.
India's September flash manufacturing purchasing manager's index rose to 55.7 from 52.8 in August. The flash services PMI for the month rose to 55.8 from 54.1 reported in August. The flash composite PMI was 56.5 for September, up from 54.3 in August. "...a stronger-than-expected September flash PMI reinforced confidence in the resilience of economic activity, indicating that growth remains intact without a corresponding build-up in inflationary pressures," Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, said in a note.
Among individual stocks, Whirlpool of India surged sharply intraday and ended at its upper band level of INR 865.25, up 20%. The stock jumped after sources told CNBC Awaaz that promoter Whirlpool Mauritius is set to sell its entire 39.76% stake in the Indian company. The stock ended as the top gainer among Nifty 500 constituents and touched a three-month-high.
Ola Electric Mobility closed over 10% higher in the Nifty 500. The stock ended higher for the third consecutive session and gained nearly 17% during this period. New orders in the company's battery business and positive response to its electric-vehicle motorcycle launches are among the chief factors driving the gains in the stock, according to Yash Agarwal, research analyst at Nirmal Bang Institutional Equities. After a sharp drop in its market share post the IPO, the company has managed to grow its market share to 10% from 5% in December. Shares of Prime Focus ended the day nearly 6% lower and were the worst hit among Nifty 500 constituents. The shares fell after the company's step-down subsidiary Brahma AI Holdings raised $150 million through equity issuances.
