The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation released the 'Domestic Tourism in India' report based on a survey on domestic tourism expenditure from July 2025 to June 2026. For urban households, train was the most availed mode for travelling with 35.1% share for such trips, followed by bus with 25.1%.

Overall, 47.7% of overnight trips were undertaken for 'pilgrimage and religious' purposes, the report said. The second-largest share of 38.4% overnight trips was for 'health and medical' purposes in rural areas. 'Holidaying, leisure and recreation' had the second-largest share of 36.4% for urban areas. "Among 100 overnight trips completed during last 30 days, 89 trips were performed for 'social' purpose," the ministry said.

The survey also found that 'business trips' recorded the maximum average expenditure per trip of INR 5,949 by households for overnight trips made during the last 30 days. Shopping accounted for the highest expenditure share for same-day trips in both rural and urban areas.
