NEW DELHI – The government will disburse salaries and pensions for the month of September on Friday instead of the last day of the month to avoid any disruption in transactions during the proposed three-day bank strike from Sept. 28. "The wages for September, 2026 of the industrial employees of Central Government may also be disbursed in advance on 25th September 2026," an office memorandum from the Department of Expenditure said.
"The salary/wages/pension so disbursed is to be treated as advance payments and will be subject to adjustment after the full month's salary/wages/pension of each employee/pensioner is determined. The adjustment, if any, will be made without exception from the salary/wages for October 2026," the notification read. The ministries and departments have been asked to take necessary action immediately.
The United Forum of Bank Unions and other unions in public sector banks, supported by regional rural banks, have called for the strike in support of implementation of five-day banking. The strike coincides with the closing days of the September quarter. Payments and other banking transactions scheduled towards the end of September may also be processed in advance, wherever feasible, to avoid delays and disruptions, the department said.
Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of India will also bring these instructions to the notice of paying branches of all banks for immediate necessary action, according to the notification.
The government has already instructed public sector banks to stay open Sunday in view of the proposed three-day strike. Moreover, some banks have also said that they are taking steps to ensure their branches function smoothly during the period. End
