NEW DELHI - The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation is using artificial intelligence to improve the quality of data collection and its analysis, secretary Saurabh Garg said Thursday. "Data processing has become so much simpler and faster that the data is getting uploaded at the backend to a platform" with the help of artificial intelligence, Garg said.

There is a need for data to be agile, and the statistics ministry is addressing this concern with the help of artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence is also helping in terms of "ensuring timeliness of data", Garg said at an event here. "We are using AI in analytical work, in trying to pull out what are the insights that can be drawn from different data sets."

Citing an example, Garg said the ministry's enumerators are benefiting from using artificial intelligence at the ground level. "It is helping improve the quality of data collection also, as it is in terms of data analysis," he said.

However, Garg also pointed out uncertainty about artificial intelligence's impact on other areas. "How AI will impact other aspects of the government or other aspects is still an evolving area," he said.

The ministry is also working with state governments for data harmonisation, Garg said.  End
