NEW DELHI – Refuting claims of any agreement over implementation of five-day banking, a senior finance ministry official said "there was no commitment". The United Forum of Bank Unions in its latest circular on Wednesday, had said that "there is no positive outcome and response from the Indian Banks' Association or the Department of Financial Services to our demand for introduction of five days banking as agreed in the Settlement/Joint Note on 8-3-2024."
The official said in order to address concerns raised by unions over the implementation of a performance-linked incentive scheme for bank staff, the government had already decided to keep the scheme in abeyance. The government also held several rounds of discussions over the demand for five-day workweek for banks through dialogue, the official added.
The United Forum of Bank Unions and other unions in public sector banks, supported by regional rural banks, have called for a three-day strike from Sept. 28-30, in support of implementation of five-day banking. The proposed strike coincides with the half-yearly closing of banks on Sept. 30, which is crucial for reconciliation, provisioning, and treasury and market operations.
The government has already instructed public sector banks to stay open Sunday to help customers with their banking needs. To avoid any disruption in transactions during the proposed three-day bank strike from Sept. 28, the government will also disburse salaries and pensions for the month of September on Friday instead of the last day of the month.
