NEW DELHI – Delhi Police detained the Indian Youth Congress National President Uday Bhanu Chib and other members near Jantar Mantar on Friday as they protested against the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The youth wing of the Indian National Congress held a demonstration calling for Kumar's resignation.

"The greatest treason is done by the chief election commissioner of this country. Gyanesh is the 'traitor' of the country. The citizens of this country will not forgive what he has done," Chib said ahead of the March from Raisina Road to Jantar Mantar. The Central Industrial Security Force and the Rapid Action Force barricaded the road in the high-security area.

"Today, we will march with the Youth Congress outside the office of the Election Commission and tell them that those who steal the country, those who steal the vote in the country, will not be spared. The soldiers of Rahul Gandhi will not let the independence of the country, the democracy of the country, be destroyed," he added.

Congress workers also held a demonstration before the party's Rouse Avenue office. Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee workers were to march towards Nirvachan Sadan, the office of the Election Commission of India, led by President Devender Yadav and All India Congress Committee Delhi In-Charge Qazi Nizamuddin. Police and paramilitary personnel were deployed along the route.

Over 200 personnel from the Delhi Police, Sashastra Seema Bal, and the Central Industrial Security Force were posted in front of the Election Commission office.

The protests followed an investigative report by the Indian Express newspaper that said several decisions pertaining to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls across the country were taken without the knowledge of two of the three election commissioners, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, who formally recorded their objections at least 14 times over the past 10 months.

On Thursday, a day before the demonstration, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said at a press conference that Kumar must resign immediately. He also said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah will be investigated for election fraud. He further suggested that Kumar turn approver in connection with the alleged election-related irregularities.
