NEW DELHI – State-run mining company NMDC Ltd. is stepping up its diversification efforts beyond iron ore, expanding into coal mining and exploring opportunities in critical and strategic minerals in India and abroad, Chairman and Managing Director Amitava Mukherjee said at the company's annual general meeting on Monday. In January, the company forayed into coal mining through operations at the Tokisud North coal mine in Hazaribagh district in Jharkhand.
"NMDC will continue to explore opportunities for diversification into critical and strategic minerals, both domestically and internationally, in alignment with India's evolving mineral security needs," Mukherjee told shareholders. As part of its diversification efforts, the company has opened offices in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and Sydney, Australia, Mukherjee said.
The company has an iron ore production target of 60 million tonnes per annum in 2026-27 (Apr-Mar) and 100 million tonnes per annum by FY30. In FY26, the company produced 53.16 million tonnes of iron ore. "The year ahead will be the year of execution, consolidation and transformation. Stabilising our higher production base, reaching the 60 MT (million tonnes) production milestone, completing critical infrastructure projects and advancing the next phases of capacity expansion will remain key priorities," Mukherjee said. "The journey towards 100 MTPA (million tonnes per annum) will require operational excellence, disciplined capital allocation, strong project execution, technology adoption and unwavering commitment to safety and sustainability."
On Sunday, the company commissioned its pellet plant at Nagarnar in Chhattisgarh as part of an INR 54.27 billion integrated project of iron ore processing, pipeline, and pellet making. The new plant has a capacity of 2 million tonnes per annum. The project will connect the company's iron ore operations at Bacheli, Chhattisgarh, to its steel plant at Nagarnar. In addition to the newly commissioned pellet plant, the integrated project comprises a new iron ore processing plant in Bacheli and a 15-million-tonne-per-annum slurry pipeline, the company said in an exchange filing. The 135-kilometre slurry pipeline transports processed iron ore concentrate from Bacheli to Nagarnar, offering an alternative to road transportation. The facilities will enable NMDC to process iron ore fines and slimes from its Bailadila mines in Chhattisgarh into concentrate and subsequently into pellets. The pellet plant uses straight grate induration technology to produce pellets for steelmaking, according to the company.
"This milestone marks the successful integrated commissioning of the entire SPL system, comprising an iron ore processing plant at Bacheli, the 135 km slurry pipeline traversing three districts and a 2.0 million-tonne pellet plant at Nagarnar. These projects will enhance evacuation capacity and improve the overall efficiency of the Bailadila value chain," Mukherjee said.
For the June quarter, the company reported a net profit of INR 20.07 billion on revenues of INR 67.95 billion. Monday, the company's shares closed 3.1% lower at INR 77.43 on the National Stock Exchange. End
