NEW DELHI – India's industrial output, as measured by the Index of Industrial Production, grew 8.0% in August, led by higher manufacturing and electricity output. Data released by the statistics ministry Monday showed that India's factory output growth accelerated from 7.4% in July. The July print was revised upwards from the provisional estimate of 6.7%.

Industrial growth in August was above consensus. According to an Informist poll, industrial growth was seen at 7.0% in August. Industrial output rose 4.7% in August last year.

Overall industrial growth was supported by manufacturing output, which grew 9.0% on year in August, compared with 3.6% a year ago and 8.2% in July. Growth in manufacturing output was "aided by a favourable base on account of inventory recalibration in the year-ago month ahead of the implementation of the GST (goods and services tax) rate cuts," Rahul Agrawal, principal economist at ICRA, said in a note.

Output of the electricity and gas supply sector grew 12.3% in August, the fastest growth in 27 months, compared with 3.7% in August last year and 8.7% in July. Electricity generation rose 13.3% in August, with generation from renewable and non-renewable sources rising 15.4% and 12.3%, respectively. The sector's growth was limited by gas supply production, which contracted 2.4% in August.

Growth in the water supply, sewerage and waste management sector slowed to 6.3% in August from 6.9% a year ago and 7.4% in July. Output of the mining and quarrying sector contracted 5.6% in August, the steepest decline in the new IIP series. The sector's output grew 15.8% a year ago and contracted 0.9% in July. The contraction in August was mainly due to lower production of non-metallic minerals and fuel minerals, which declined 12.8% and 5.7%, respectively, on year.

Under the use-based classification, output of capital goods, intermediate goods, infrastructure and construction goods, and consumer durables grew by double digits in August. Capital goods output, the fastest-growing among the six use-based categories, grew 16.9% in August, up from 6.0% a year ago but slower than 19.0% in July. Intermediate goods output rose 13.7% from 3.3% a year ago, while consumer durables output grew 11.1% from 0.9% a year ago.

Infrastructure and construction goods output rose 12.0% in August from 9.2% a year ago and 8.0% in July. Primary goods output growth moderated to 3.5% in August from 7.6% a year ago and 4.2% in July. Consumer non-durables output grew 2.1% in August, up from 0.1% a year ago. The sector had contracted 0.8% in July.

In Apr-Aug, the first five months of 2026-27, India's factory output rose 6.7% on year compared with 4.2% in the corresponding period a year ago. IIP growth averaged 7.7% in Jul-Aug, up from 6.2% in Apr-Jun, suggesting industrial volume growth remained strong in these months and should partly offset the likely impact of margin pressure from the renewed surge in global commodity prices on Jul-Sept GDP growth, Agrawal said.
