NEW DELHI – India will support the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank's 2027 budget plans and help the multilateral development bank scale up operations in its focus areas, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told AIIB President Zou Jiayi Tuesday. The two leaders also discussed the bank's robust pipeline of projects in India and its expanding global presence, the finance ministry said.

The AIIB is a multilateral development bank focussing on infrastructure financing in Asia and beyond. It began operations in Beijing in 2016 and has since grown to have 111 approved members worldwide. As per the institution's documents, the bank has a capitalisation of $100 billion and is rated 'AAA' by major international credit rating agencies. Sitharaman was attending the bank's annual meeting in Doha, Qatar. India is the bank's second-largest shareholder.

Jiayi told Sitharaman that AIIB will continue financing projects for people, urban development and environmental protection in India. Sitharaman also said AIIB could expand beyond physical infrastructure financing to include newer infrastructure focused on artificial intelligence, micro, small and medium enterprises, and skilling. "FM noted that MSMEs are the backbone of India's economy, and assistance for AI adaptability and manpower training can help MSMEs," the ministry said in a post on X.

The finance minister also reiterated that the AIIB's regional centrality should continue to remain a defining institutional characteristic and an important anchor of its mandate.  End
