NEW DELHI – Policymakers must ensure a level playing field across all vehicle types and fuel options, including electric vehicles, liquefied natural gas, compressed natural gas, or any other alternative infrastructure being developed as India navigates its energy transition, said Anjani Kumar Tiwari, member of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board.

There is a need for a level playing field in terms of taxation, subsidies, and various other incentives. Unless these regulatory and financial measures are implemented, economic considerations alone will not enable consumers to adopt these energy options, Tiwari said.

The core policy question facing the country is not about replacing one fuel with all others, but rather identifying which fuel is best suited for specific applications, operating conditions, and stages within India's transition journey, Tiwari said.

Natural gas has emerged as the most preferred fuel, according to a report by The Energy and Resources Institute.

Tiwari noted that PNGRB has authorised geographical areas on a pan-India basis to build infrastructure for natural gas, but the targets can only be achieved if these assets are fully supported and complemented by surrounding infrastructure.  End
