NEW DELHI – The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a 1-10% hike in the minimum support price of six rabi crops for the 2027-28 marketing season starting in April, to ensure remunerative prices to farmers. It has also approved an outlay of INR 909.62 billion as procurement expenses for these crops during the season.

Among the crops, wheat received the smallest hike, while sunflower and mustard received the largest. The minimum support price for wheat, a key rabi crop, was hiked by INR 25, or barely 1%, to INR 2,610 per 100 kg. This is significantly lower than last year's INR 160 hike as the government aims to encourage cultivation of oilseeds and pulses amid adequate foodgrain stock availability in the country.

The Food Corp. of India had an opening stock of 48 million tonnes of wheat in September, up 44% year on year, due to robust wheat production and procurement last year. The government actively procures foodgrains such as wheat and rice to ensure food security and check market prices by improving supply through open market sales of its stocks.

Meanwhile, the MSP of masur was hiked by 5.6% to INR 7,390 per 100 kg and chana by 1.4% to INR 5,958. Among oilseeds, the MSP of safflower was increased by 10.3% to INR 7,215 per 100 kg, and mustard by 6.7% to INR 6,613 per 100 kg. Although safflower prices are high, mustard remains the major oilseed farmers cultivate in the country during the rabi season. In terms of profitability, the minimum support price of mustard is 96% higher than the average cost of production, while safflower is 50%, an official release said.

Interestingly, wheat has the highest margins of 106% among crops, despite a relatively modest minimum support price, as cultivation costs are the lowest for the staple grain. The support price for barley has been increased by INR 136, or 6.3%, to INR 2,286 per 100 kg.

The following table details the minimum support price of key rabi crops for the 2027-28 rabi marketing season, in INR per 100 kg, compared with the year-ago support prices, and the change in percentage and absolute terms.
