NEW DELHI – India's goods and services tax collection continued its growth momentum and rose 14.7% on year in September to INR 2.035 trillion, government data released Thursday showed. On a month-on-month basis, the tax collection rose 1.8% from INR 1.999 trillion collected in August.

Domestic GST revenue last month rose 10.1% on year to INR 1.380 trillion, the release said. Imports revenue grew 25.9% on year to INR 655.25 billion. GST revenue, net of refunds, rose at a quicker pace of 18.1% on year to INR 1.765 trillion in September. This was helped by a fall in refunds, which were down 3.0% on year to INR 270.01 billion.

According to tax experts, it's important to see how much of the import GST growth is raw materials as compared with finished goods. "It'll be good to analyse this in detail, specifically if it signals already stronger domestic manufacturing or there is a need for further push, thereby making stronger the case for continuing and expanding schemes like PLI." Abhishek Jain, Partner and National Head, Indirect Tax - KPMG, said.

Central GST collection in September rose to INR 377.62 billion from INR 336.45 billion a year ago. State GST collection last month was INR 453.63 billion, up from INR 418.36 billion in the corresponding month a year ago. Integrated GST mop-up was INR 1.204 trillion, higher than INR 1.019 trillion collected in September 2025. The post-settlement revenue of states was INR 920.75 billion in September, up 14% on year.

As per the Budget estimates, the government's GST collections in 2026-27 (Apr-Mar) are projected to grow 6.3% on year. Collectively, in the first six months of FY27, GST collections grew 11.6% to INR 12.463 trillion.  End
