NEW DELHI – Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal Thursday met US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on the sidelines of the G20 trade ministers' meeting and had a productive discussion related to an early conclusion of a mutually beneficial interim agreement under the India-US bilateral trade agreement, the minister said in a post on X.
The meeting was held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the US, and both the sides also exchanged views on G20 deliberations under the US Chairship. Negotiations between India and the US on a trade deal have been going through many ebbs and flows. While both the countries continue to negotiate a bilateral trade agreement, India is seeking a preferential treatment over its Asian peers in the deal. A fresh spanner in the works is a US legislation proposing tariffs on buyers of Russian oil, giving US President Donald Trump the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries, including India, that purchase energy from Russia.
Goyal also met European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security o Maros Sefcovic on the sidelines and reviewed progress towards the signing and entry into force of the India-European Union free trade agreement. "Also exchanged views on progress under the India-EU Trade and Technology Council, meaningful WTO reform and shared G20 priorities," he said in a post on X. The commerce ministry expects India's FTA with the European Union, which was concluded in January, to be signed before the end of this year.
The minister also met Marcelo Ebrard, secretary of economy of Mexico, on the sidelines of the G20 trade ministers' meeting. Both the sides discussed the potential for deeper cooperation and unlocking new avenues to further advance India-Mexico trade and investment ties, Goyal said. The minister also met trade ministers of Brazil and Poland on the sidelines of the G20 meeting. End
