MUMBAI – Benchmark indices snapped a four-session losing streak and ended higher amid supportive global cues. Crude oil futures were rangebound after the Group of Seven nations agreed Sunday to release oil stocks, easing supply-related anxieties. Further, lower expectations of a rate hike by the US Federal Reserve following weaker-than-expected US jobs data also supported markets Monday.

With more than half of its constituents ending in the green, the Nifty 50 index closed 0.6% higher at 22555.75, up 133.80 points, while the BSE Sensex closed 0.7% higher at 72382.47, up 472.77 points. The Nifty 50 index touched an intraday high of 22621.80 points but gave up half of its intraday gains.

Nifty 50 option contracts have significant open interest at 22600 points, putting strong selling pressure at that level, according to technical analysts. Monday, the December futures of Brent crude eased to $100 per barrel only to rise again to over $102 per barrel amid concerns over damage to key oil infrastructure following Yemen Houthis' latest attack on Saudi Aramco's facilities.

Near-term movement in the domestic market will continue to be dictated by global cues even though September quarter earnings could drive stock-specific action, according to a senior analyst at a domestic broking firm. Further, regulatory overhauls in the works, notably in the insurance space, are also weighing on market sentiment, the analyst said. The most potent trigger for sustained positive traction in the domestic markets would be a truce between the US and Iran, the analyst said. An ensuing $20-$30 per barrel fall in crude oil prices would spark positive momentum in the markets.

Shares of ITC ended 5% higher as the top gainer in the Nifty 50 after global brokerage Citi upgraded the stock to 'buy' from 'sell' and raised its target price to INR 300, according to media reports. The target price represents nearly 12% upside from Monday's closing price. The recent correction has factored in risks related to volumes and profitability, making the current risk-reward more favourable, according to the brokerage. Shares of Bajaj Finance ended over 2% higher, among Monday's notable outperformers. The rise came after the lender announced Thursday that it would raise INR 117 billion through a qualified institutional placement and issue equity warrants aggregating to INR 58 billion on a preferential basis to its promoter, Bajaj Finserv.

On the flip side, HCL Technologies ended over 3% lower as the Nifty 50's worst performer, while peer Infosys fell 1.4%. The decline came despite strong August-quarter earnings from global technology major Accenture. Brokerage Nuvama Institutional Equities said Accenture's results, commentary, and guidance were slightly positive for Indian information technology players.

Nifty-50 heavyweight stock HDFC Bank ended over 2% lower amid persistent selling pressure, according to an analyst. However, the recent appointment of Anup Bagchi as the bank's new managing director and chief executive officer is expected to have positive long-term implications for the lender, according to brokerages.

Several banking stocks gained on Monday after lenders released provisional business updates for the September quarter. Shares of AU Small Finance Bank ended over 4% higher after it reported a 27.9% on-year growth in gross advances to INR 1.50 trillion. Its deposits rose to INR 1.70 trillion, up 28.6% on year. Bank of Baroda ended almost 1% higher after the lender said its domestic advances rose to INR 11.88 trillion, up 13.5% on year. Its domestic deposits rose 17% to INR 14.88 trillion. Shares of Federal Bank, Punjab National Bank, and Bank of India ended about 3% higher each.

Among other notable movers, shares of FSN E-Commerce Ventures ended over 4% higher after its parent Nykaa said it expects consolidated net revenues to grow in the "late twenties" in the September quarter and net sales value to grow in the "early thirties". The stock was among the top gainers in the Nifty 200 index. On the other hand, Avenue Supermarts ended over 6% lower as the worst performer in both the Nifty 200 and Nifty 500 indices. The decline came after global brokerage Goldman Sachs maintained its "sell" recommendation on the stock and retained its target at INR 3,800, nearly 7?ove Monday's close.

In the broader markets, the Nifty midcap indices ended 0.4-0.7% higher, while the Nifty small-cap indices ended 0.3-0.5% higher. Most sectoral indices ended in the green, with the Nifty FMCG index up nearly 2% as the top gainer, while the Nifty Healthcare index fell 1% as the worst performer.
