NEW DELHI – The National Students' Union of India, student wing of the Indian National Congress, Monday staged a symbolic protest here, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged discrepancies in the special intensive revision of electoral rolls. Protesters wrapped themselves in white shrouds and wore garlands around their necks, portraying themselves as "dead" after the alleged removal of living voters from electoral rolls. The Delhi Police stopped the demonstrators from reaching Jantar Mantar to continue their protest, while several others were detained.

The activists also raised slogans such as "Vote Chor, Gaddi Chhod", translating to "vote thief, leave your seat", against the government and the poll panel chief. The protest was led by the student body's national president Vinod Jakhar at the organisation's headquarters on Raisina Road. The student union demanded Kumar's resignation, saying it is "non-negotiable", according to media reports. It also vowed to continue the protest until the demand is fulfilled.

Demonstrators were not permitted to protest because of the imposition of Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, prohibiting unauthorised assemblies, processions, sit-ins, and sloganeering in the area. Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court refused to pass an interim order suspending Chief Election Commissioner Kumar on a petition alleging that he took unilateral decisions on the special intensive revision of electoral rolls even after two election commissioners recorded their dissent.

In the past few days, New Delhi has seen various protests staged by the All India Students' Association, Students' Federation of India, Aam Aadmi Party, and the Congress, among others. The protests followed an investigative report by The Indian Express newspaper that said several decisions about the special intensive revision of electoral rolls across the country were taken without the knowledge of two of the three election commissioners--Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi--who formally recorded their objections at least 14 times over the past 10 months.  End
