NEW DELHI – The Jantar Mantar protest site was closed for the media and citizens on Monday with heavy barricading by the Delhi police and the Rapid Action Force. "We have been asked to restrict anyone from entering the protest site," a Delhi Police personnel told Informist near the Janpath metro station.
The protest, which demands the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged manipulation and deletion of millions of voters from electoral rolls, entered its fourth day on Monday. The site near Delhi's Patel Chowk metro station has seen restricted access for the past four to five days, a local vendor told Informist. The restrictions have directly impacted the local businesses as fewer people are now reaching the protest site, another vendor told Informist.
Demonstrators were not allowed to stage a protest due to the imposition of Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, prohibiting unauthorised assemblies, processions, sit-ins and sloganeering in the area. Delhi Police said the restrictions are in force across New Delhi district in view of public safety, order, and to facilitate smooth traffic movement. The Delhi police were seen directing the protestors to take another route as both gates were heavily barricaded.
The protests followed an investigative report by The Indian Express newspaper according to which several decisions about the special intensive revision of electoral rolls across the country were taken without the knowledge of two of the three election commissioners--Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi--who formally recorded their objections at least 14 times over the past 10 months.
Notably, a separate protest has been organised by independent journalists and activists following allegations by three female reporters of sexual harassment by Delhi Police personnel, including Assistant Commissioner of Police Vivek Bhagat, according to media reports. End
