NEW DELHI – A day after Delhi police detained several members of Parliament from the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance, they are holding a flash protest at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, who is leading the protest, said about 300 MPs who wanted to meet the Chief Election Commissioner were not allowed to do so on Tuesday.
"So today, we plan to go to the designated protest site, Jantar Mantar, and sit there together once again, and tell the country that for us, Gyanesh Kumar is not the legitimate election commissioner of the country," Rahul Gandhi said. The MPs are demanding Kumar's resignation over alleged "vote theft" and irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
"I have 45 FIRs (first information reports), and my goal is to have 100 FIRs. Every FIR is a medal for me," Gandhi said. Media reports said a case has been registered against INDIA bloc MPs, including Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, for allegedly forcing their way into Akashwani Bhawan on Tuesday. Like Tuesday, security has been tightened around Parliament and the Election Commission headquarters on Wednesday.
The protests followed an investigative report by The Indian Express newspaper, which reported that several decisions on the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls across the country were taken without the knowledge of two of the three election commissioners – Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi – who formally recorded their objections at least 14 times over the past 10 months.
Protests have intensified since last week following allegations by three female reporters of sexual harassment by Delhi Police personnel, including Assistant Commissioner of Police Vivek Bhagat, according to media reports.
Authorities have imposed an order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita in Central Delhi. End
