NEW DELHI – Indian households' three-month and one-year ahead inflation expectations increased in September on the back of geopolitical uncertainties, a weak monsoon, and volatile energy prices, according to the Reserve Bank of India's inflation expectations survey. The median inflation perception of households increased by 60 basis points to 8.4% compared with the previous round, while median inflation expectations for the next three months and one year rose by 70 bps and 60 bps to 9.9% and 10.0%, according to the survey, released Wednesday.
"The proportion of respondents anticipating a rise in general inflation has inched up," the RBI survey said. The survey was conducted during Sept. 10-20 in 19 major cities, with 5,987 responses.
Given the inflationary pressures, the RBI's Monetary Policy Committee Wednesday raised the repo rate by 25 bps to 5.50%, the first rate hike in over three years. "The MPC also decided to change the stance to calibrated tightening by a majority of 4-2," RBI Governor Malhotra said in his statement.
According to the latest data, headline inflation rose to a 20-month high of 4.82% on year in August from 4.45% in July, surpassing the RBI's medium-term target of 4% for the third consecutive month. The RBI on Wednesday raised the headline inflation outlook for 2026-27 (Apr-Mar) by 20 bps to 5.2%. End
