MUMBAI – New India Assurance Co. Ltd. reported a net loss in the second quarter in a row due to a spike in change in outstanding claims. Low growth in the net premium earned and a fall in net income from investments weighed on the total income, leading to a net loss during the September quarter.

The company posted a net loss of INR 12.67 billion for the September quarter against a net profit of INR 633 million in the year-ago quarter. The company's incurred claims rose over 8% on year to INR 94.79 billion in the September quarter. The change in outstanding claims, including those incurred but not reported, surged to INR 34.01 billion from INR 14.62 billion. The company's total expenses increased nearly 15% on year to INR 148.70 billion.

The company's total income increased marginally on year to INR 125.39 billion during the September quarter from INR 123.13 billion in the year-ago quarter. The public-sector company earned a net premium of INR 96.32 billion, up 2.5% on year, while the net income from investments fell marginally to INR 29.07 billion from INR 29.14 billion a year ago.

The company's gross premium written for the September quarter was INR 110.8 billion, up from INR 105.4 billion a year ago. "Q2FY27 has been one of the most challenging quarters for the company in recent times, more so while succeeding another equally challenging one for the entire industry," Lavanya R. Mundayur, chairman and managing director of the company, said. "The property segment suffered significant underwriting losses as well, due to multiple large risk tosses, and flood claims in Gujarat, North India, and North East India. The Aviation segment had an adverse experience during the quarter as also motor and health," the managing director said.

"The lack of premium revision in the MotorTP segment continues to hurt the company and the industry," Mundayur said. The company made an additional provision of INR 7.15 billion for its motor operations during the quarter.

The company realised INR 18 billion of capital gains from the sale of its share in the National Stock Exchange Ltd. during the quarter. The company's combined ratio was 156.20% as of Sept. 30, against 121.44% a quarter ago.
